Every now and then, someone absolutely nails your story and that’s exactly what District 0 has done in their Union Jack’s Saigon feature, “Matt Ryan: Making a Home of the World.”
It’s a fantastic piece written by Liam Langan, who captures not just my journey from the UK to Vietnam, but the heart behind Union Jack’s.
If you haven’t come across District 0 yet, you’re missing out. They’re an independent Saigon-based media team that celebrates the people, places, and stories that make this city tick. Their writers shine a light on the heartbeat of Saigon.
And for this article, Liam’s captured the nostalgia, the madness, and the magic of building a little corner of home right here in Vietnam, complete with Proper Fish & Chips and plenty of crazy times along the way.

For anyone new around here, Union Jack’s is our little slice of Britain in the heart of Saigon. We serve up proper fish and chips: golden, flaky fish, triple-cooked chips, and mushy peas done right, alongside a vast menu of British treats, a good pint and a friendly chat. It’s a place where expats, locals, and travellers alike can have a taste of Britain and feel right at home. Check out our menu for a taste of the classic British, Irish & Australian comfort food.
The article dives into what makes this city so special too: the mix of cultures, the food scene, and the people who make it all tick. District 0 even put together a fun Instagram video where I share a few of my favourite Saigon spots (and try not to look too awkward on camera).

Massive thanks to Liam and the whole District 0 crew for shining a light on what we do here at Union Jack’s, and for continuing to tell the stories that make Saigon such a brilliant, bonkers, wonderful place to live.
If you fancy a read, check out “Matt Ryan: Making a Home of the World” over on District 0 and maybe pop by Union Jack’s for a pint and some proper fish and chips while you’re at it. Cheers!
